Social Media

While Millennials are generally not yet capable of giving the same substantial gifts older generations are, they’re are proving to be incredibly philanthropic and willing to give their time and energy to a cause they care about.  If you want their inclusion in your cause, you have to be where they are: social media.  We can guide you through the best practices for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to appeal to younger generations.

Direct Mail

While online fundraising is growing every year, direct mail is far from a dying practice. In fact, it’s critical to a nonprofit’s success, with the average nonprofit organization collecting between 60 to 80 percent of their revenue through direct mail. Major Donor Cultivation

Finding new donors can be an exhausting exercise that results in little return on investment.  Aside from that, how many of your current small-dollar donors have the capacity to be giving substantially more and how do you identify who they are?  Using wealth screening technology, we can explore an individual’s past philanthropic and political giving, wealth indicators, and personal backgrounds.  Supplied with this information, you will know exactly who to ask and what to ask for.  We can either screen prospects en masse or as part of a larger major donor cultivation package.

Online Communications

While still far behind direct mail, online fundraising is growing every year and it’s the best instrument for securing monthly donors.  We can write you hard-hitting online communications and make sure your website is properly prepared to take contributions, including recurring contributions from donors who want to give monthly.

Planned Giving

Planned giving, also called legacy giving or estate planning, is an oft-ignored pillar of any fundraising operation. More and more donors are becoming interested in how they can leave a legacy and your nonprofit must be prepared to make a case for stewarding that legacy. We can help your nonprofit either build a planned giving program from scratch or invigorate one you already have in place through smart marketing, precise donor research, and proper relationship-building.

Board Development

Aside from guiding the mission of a nonprofit, boards can be powerful engines of fundraising. Bio

Jonathan Kellam is a leading fundraising consultant with over a decade of experience partnering with nonprofits and political campaigns.  Getting his start “dialing for dollars” as a volunteer, Jonathan quickly developed into a major fundraising force in Florida politics where he worked on local, state and congressional Democratic campaigns.

After moving to Washington, D.C., Jonathan worked for a large nonprofit organization where he focused on major donor development to comprise an annual budget of $15 million while also securing an additional $15 million in planned gifts.  Since founding Umbrella Consulting, Jonathan has helped numerous nonprofits and campaigns understand what truly drives donors – proper stewardship that results in real relationships and ensuring every gift is acknowledged appropriately.

Jonathan holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Central Florida and an MPS in Political Management from The George Washington University.  He is also a decorated veteran of the Army National Guard.  When he’s not raising money, Jonathan frequently speaks at conferences and on college campuses around the country.
